PYRN DACH at the 8th AK Permafrost meeting

On 22-24 January 2016, a meeting of PYRN DACH (Germany-Austria-Switzerland) was held in the frame of the 8th AK Permafrost meeting in Hamburg, Germany. We came together to discuss the recent development of the network, ICOP2016 preparation and future visions for PYRN. Christina Schädel (Northern Arizona University), Christian Beer (Stockholm University) and Christian Hauck (University of Fribourg) reported on their career development in permafrost research and opened new perspectives and discussions on a scientist`s life. Samuel Weber (University of Zurich) was appointed as new representative for PYRN Switzerland next to Ingo Hartmeyer (University of Salzburg) representing Austria and Josefine Lenz (AWI Potsdam) representing Germany. During the general AK Permafrost meeting more than half of the 66 participants were Early Career Researchers who contributed to lively discussions and knowledge exchange by various presentations on mountainous permafrost, modelling, paleo-... Young Researchers Workshop at ICOP 2016

A “Young Researchers Workshop” will take place at the XI. International Conference on Permafrost (ICOP 2016). This workshop is organized as a joint effort of PYRN (Permafrost Young Researchers Network), APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists), the young researcher representatives of the USPA (United States Permafrost Association), and ADAPT (Arctic Development and Adaptation to Permafrost in Transition).
The workshop aims at providing opportunities to young researchers to learn and build interdisciplinary knowledge:

• how to get published in scientific journals (professional trainer)
• practical methods and
• essential soft skills.

The first PYRN Outstanding Oral Presentation Award was presented to two Carleton University students at the GeoQuebec 2015. The award of $300 CAD was shared by Brendan O´Neill and Marcus Phillips, who gave excellent presentations titled “Permafrost Degradation Adjacent to Snow Fences along the Dempster Highway, Peel Plateau, NWT” and “Improving Water Content Description of Ice-rich Permafrost Soils”, respectively. Congratulations!

PYRN at PAST Gateways conference 2015

The 3rd PAST Gateways Conference & Workshop was held in Potsdam/Germany from 18-22 May 2015. An athletic practical networking training in the highrope AdventurePark Potsdam was organized by PYRN. Furtheron, Early Career Researchers where co-chairing sessions, posters were presented to the auditorium during 1-minute-1-slide presentations and two awards given to the best posters.

PAST Gateways is an IASC endorsed network research programme, the scientific goal of which is to understand Arctic environmental change during the period preceding instrumental records and across decadal to millennial timescales. The focus of the six year programme is on the nature and significance of Arctic gateways, both spatial and temporal, with an emphasis on the transitions between major Late Cenozoic climate events such as interglacials to full glacials and full glacial to deglacial states, as well as more recent Holocene fluctuations.

There are three major themes to ... Read more...
