The International Training School “Bubbles 2017” was organized at UiT (the Arctic University of Norway) in Tromsø. The school covered interdisciplinary overview of the methane role in a changing environment. The main aim of the Bubbles 2017 was to provide an interdisciplinary introduction to the role of methane in marine and terrestrial environments (e.g. permafrost) from generation, migration, consumption and impact on the seafloor, water column and finally into the atmosphere. Dozens of lectures and exercises on gases have been given for two weeks. The most of the lectures were devoted to the marine seepage and identification of gas emission, gas hydrates deposits, pockmarks, and how the sediment and diagenetic biogeochemistry works. One lecture covered the subject of terrestrial methane in permafrost directly: “Methane emissions from the terrestrial and submarine permafrost regions” given by Frans-Jan Parmentier.
More than 60 students and early career researchers have participated in the school. Participants were from diverse parts of the World: Norway, Sweden, South Korea, Taiwan, India, Italy, USA, Kenya, and Russia. Twelve PYRs study methane in frozen soils of Siberia, the Kola peninsula, Svalbard and in submarine permafrost regions, primarily the Eastern Siberian Arctic and the Beaufort Sea. The fantastic organization of the school leading by Giuliana Panieri and local comprehensive support has been done by AMGG. https://bubbles.uit.no/ Some pictures are here https://vk.com/album-18849773_246784297
